Over the centuries, great Buddhist scholars, saints, lamas, yogis, and teachers have come to this isolated Himalayan Kingdom to immerse themselves in meditation as an alternative way of living and quest for the ultimate truth. Bhutan's whole kingdom is considered a ‘Baeyul’, a land hidden by Guru Rinpoche from evil spirits and more relevantly from the evils of modernization and consumerism. It has numerous holy sites and caves blessed by Guru Rinpoche and many other learned saints. Many small retreat centers and hermitages are located near temples and monasteries high in the mountains. For Buddhist practitioners and monks, it is common for them to disappear into the hills and mountains for days, months, and years. Meditation is an integral part of Buddhism, a journey into the self and time to reflect upon life and the whole purpose of life and death.

Punakha Valley holds a prominent place in Bhutanese history due to its strategic and historical significance. Punakha has been an important location since ancient times, serving as a fertile agricultural hub due to its favorable climate and rich soil. Its early history is intertwined with the establishment and consolidation of Bhutan as a unified kingdom. The construction of the Punakha Dzong in 1637-38 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal marks a pivotal moment in Bhutanese history. The dzong, also known as Pungthang Dewachen Phodrang (Palace of Great Happiness), served as the administrative and religious center of Bhutan. It was strategically built at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (Male River) and Mo Chhu (Female River), symbolizing the union of spiritual and temporal power. Punakha served as the capital of Bhutan and the seat of government until 1955 when the capital was moved to Thimphu. The dzong was the site of important historical events, including the coronation of Bhutan’s first king, Ugyen Wangchuck, in 1907. Punakha Dzong is a vital religious site. It houses sacred relics and serves as the winter residence of the Je Khenpo (Chief Abbot) and the monastic body. The annual Punakha Drubchen and Tshechu festivals, featuring vibrant rituals and dances, attract devotees and tourists alike.
